Destinations

I recently bought a teardrop camper and I have been thinking about travel and where I would like to go. Looking at the map gave me the idea for this piece. The bit about the work meeting is also true, happened a couple of years ago.

Destinations

Once, in a work meeting
People were talking about their holidays
I asked “Have you heard of Kalamunda?”
“No, where is it?”
“That sounds amazing!”
And it does sound amazing, 
Unless you know 
It is the town where I live.
I’ve been to Popanyinning, Quindanning and Katanning
All nice places, just down the road.
None of them sound as 
Far away and fascinating as
Goondiwindi, Cunnamulla or Coonabarabran.
For my next holiday 
I am off to the most exotic sounding 
Local places.
When I get there
I will honour the pretence
That I am somewhere from a travel brochure.
The experience of far away
Is as close 
As I’ve never spent time there before.
